Motion Exploratorium

ABOUT

This Research conducted was to understand the various ways in how Motion could be expressed in the built form. In this context, Motion refers to the possible ways of making a structure look like it appears to be moving or is actually moving.

Background

Motion is a concept i’ve been exploring not only in architecture but in my art as well. It's always exciting to figure out how to direct a viewer's focus in a picture and add an element of surprise.

This got me thinking if motion could be considered as a broader concept in Architecture? Do architects unintentionally use techniques that make their buildings look like they're moving, even though they're not?

Concept of spatial direction

Goal & objectives

To identify how motion can be visually depicted in Architecture.

Research & Classification : Identifying principles that create a sense of motion in structures.

Design Intervention : A design proposal which will integrate these principles to showcase motion.

Methodology

Research process

The research process begins with forming a hypothesis and then delves into understanding the essential concepts that explain the topic.

Research

Understanding the principles on what creates motion:

Environment movement

User’s point of views

Responsive structures

Classification

Research led to understand

3 types of motion :

Static motion

Kinetic motion

Illusory motion

Proposal

Identifying a design proposal that will embody the research findings and listing guidelines.

An Exploratorium being apt.

Design

Designing the exploratorium with a strong justification for it’s need in India.

opportunity

Following extensive research, the challenge was to conceptualise a design proposal that effectively incorporates these principles. The logical approach was to create a structure that not only provided ample space for dynamic use but also served a meaningful and justified purpose.

Design PROPOSAL

Exploratorium

Exploratorium - a centre where visitors have the opportunity to experience and handle exhibits, perform prearranged experiments, etc.

To develop a design proposal, I aimed to address a significant issue in India - the lack of awareness and understanding of building technology innovations and their importance in addressing challenges like climate change and space needs.

The concept of an "Exploratorium" emerged as a solution, serving as a physical embodiment of research findings in building technology, providing an interactive, hands-on educational environment to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and public awareness.

Augmentation

Augmentation - The action or process of making or becoming greater in size or amount (smaller ›> BIGGER)

An evident way of depicting motion is by the continuous increase in volume.

Program

The dynamic axis is used to split the major activity zones into two plazas for crowd control, while all the internal spaces maintain a visual connection along the connection axis directing visitors to explore further.

This spatial hierarchy allows visitors to learn about building technology while following a path they choose with clear visual cues.

Design strategy

The design technique to convey motion was influenced by the impact of sunlight and solar radiation on the building. Utilising fin-like elements on the structure's facade served as the primary method to both depict motion and address solar radiation concerns, offering effective shading.

Wall

Wall openings give visibility to visitors while creating interesting shadows due to its form.

Roof

The Skin traverses to become the roof which utilises it's openings as skylights.

START

The Path establishes a clear hierarchy of spaces

entrance

The skin eventually returns to its original orientation, completing the loop as the main entry point.

REAR

The skin expands to act as a barrier against solar radiation and serves as the entrance to this area.

Final

Design

The final design is a testament to the fusion of Motion, technology, and dynamism in architecture. It not only pushes the boundaries of traditional architectural concepts but also exemplifies the potential of Motion as a dynamic and ever-evolving art form.

My jury went extremely well, I was able to communicate my vision and ideas having everything with backed justification. I'm thrilled to have been able to prove my theories, this would have not been possible without the support of my research supervisor Prof. Sushama Joglekar and my colleagues.

Thankyou to everyone who supported me.
