Introduction

Okto Points is a loyalty rewards system designed to enhance user engagement within the Okto app and CoinDCX Web3. This program rewards users for every action they take on-chain, ensuring that participation is not just beneficial but also rewarding.

Okto Points marks the first step in integrating our community into the future success of Okto. By simply signing up, sending, receiving, earning, participating in futures, and completing quests, users accumulate points.

But what can users do with these points? Points seamlessly convert into $OKTO tokens, distributed as airdrops to all participants. After all, who wouldn’t want to be rewarded with free money?

Problem

With the growing competition in the Web3 wallet space, user acquisition and retention were key challenges. Many users signed up but lacked incentives to remain active on Okto & CoinDCX Web3

We needed a system that encouraged frequent and valuable engagement while aligning with Web3 principles of decentralization.

Goal & objectives

The challenge is to design a gamified Points platform that motivates users to retain and increase our wallet usage

The challenge is to design a gamified Points platform that motivates users to retain and increase our wallet usage

  1. Retention : Points will help in making sure our current user base stays loyal, with added incentive to their usual actions. (User behaviour will morph, even if they are organic users: Incentives will drive action)

  2. Engagement : Gamifying the experience, creating anticipation on gaining more bonus rewards. (Points now., NFTs at intervals)

  3. Acquisition : Reduce first-time friction for all app actions that we want users to focus on. (e.g. more airdrop hunters: either these users find PMF or they will leave)

  4. Transaction volume : Increase our transaction volume as users have new found motivation.

Competitors and Gamification

To understand the direction to take I conducted:

  1. Competitive Analysis: Studied loyalty programs in Web3 and traditional fintech to identify best practices.

  1. Gamification: Examined user loyalty programs and mobile game patterns to determine which actions should be rewarded for maximum engagement.

Rainbow

Pushes competitiveness among users with a clean UI

Limited to Ethereum chain.

No gamification to push users to acquire more points

Rainbow OP

Short and transparent regarding the program

Parcl

Straight to the point with a focus on benefits

Lack of any gamified experiences that would retain the user.

Marvel snap

Pushes the user to retain and get addicted to earning more rewards

Multiple dynamics can make the user exhausted

CoinDCX

Gamified with clear objectives

Directly deposits fiat or USDT

Unity wallet

Multiple constructs to keep users retained

Clear reward explanation

Plus wallet

Visually unappealing, lacked elements to hype up their program.

Simple program with USDT as direct rewards.

Outcome

I identified best practices from both Web3 and traditional fintech loyalty programs, ensuring that Okto Points remained compelling and competitive.

Insights from gamification research helped shape the reward mechanics, emphasizing instant gratification, streaks, and milestone-based incentives to maintain long-term engagement. This approach allowed us to create a system that not only rewarded users for transactions but also encouraged habitual usage, community participation, and deeper involvement in the Okto ecosystem.

As we moved from research to defining a solution, I initially began by constructing the information architecture, ensuring a clear and intuitive structure for earning and redeeming points. Gradually introducing gratification elements.

Vampire attack 🧛

In the crypto world, a "vampire attack" refers to a tactic where a new project often a modification of an existing one offers better conditions or rewards to attract users from the original project. The goal is to shift their loyalty and the liquidity they contribute to this new venture. ~ Coinbase

We did exactly this hehe (*evil laugh*). We suggested if you were an existing user either from an On-chain wallet or a centralised exchange by joining okto via importing your wallet address. Okto would reward you with bonus points!

After seeing the welcome animation we wanted to prevent users from just farming points with their network. To prevent this we ensured they had to unlock their points by making at least one Web3 transaction.

To create competitiveness a leaderboard was essential. This was also to ensure transparency of Points being allotted keeping things fair. Additionally a View all CTA was included to take users to a website dashboard with all stats.

Version 2

After receiving feedback we did re-work another version of the design which was more simple and refined with a greater focus on the Okto token which was lacking in the final design. (deliberate decision)

Unfortunately this was not picked due to time constraints.

Final takeaway season 1

Okto Points played a crucial role in driving user acquisition, engagement, and trading activity. The program successfully attracted new users, encouraged existing traders to stay active, and increased overall transaction volumes.

When the program was removed, there was a noticeable decline in new user growth, trading enthusiasm, and engagement, highlighting the strong influence of gamified rewards in motivating user behavior. The data clearly demonstrates that the points system was a key driver in fostering a more engaged and active trading community.

What’s next?

We’re gearing up for the next phase coming in 2025.

Season 2: Building on the learnings from Season 1, the next phase will introduce new ways to earn, improved reward structures, and deeper gamification to keep users engaged and motivated.

$OKTO Airdrop: Users who have accumulated points will soon be rewarded with $OKTO tokens, turning their loyalty into tangible value. This airdrop reinforces our commitment to rewarding active participation within the ecosystem.

Stake $OKTO : A new staking mechanism will allow users to put their earned $OKTO to work, unlocking additional benefits and rewards for long-term holders. This will also prevent large dumpings of the $OKTO token ensuring it’s stability.
